As widely known, in may 2014 a Bonelli-Eagle was found badly injured at the shore of Livadia Bay. The animal was handed over to an animal clinic in Piraeus. In june 2014, with the Lady Mayor being present, the eagle was set free at the exact loction where the animal had been found.
Congratulations to all the greek people involved! An extraordinary achievement! Special thanks to the Mayor of the island of Tilos, Maria Kammas-Aliferis, for having rightly estimated the value of this action.
The Bonelli-Eagle is one of the rarest bird species worldwide. In 2007 the ornithologist Dr. Alivisatos counted 5 breeding couples on the island. This high density of population is a definite reference to the good ecological conditions on the island, since hunting was banned in 1993. Consequently, complete food chains are being preserved.
Only if this hunting ban will continue to be effective, Tilos will remain as a "treasure island" in the Aegean Sea.
